You’re not special

Everyone is carrying something. Your hard season is real — and it is also ordinary. That is the soft landing.

An ordinary residential sidewalk at dusk with porch lights on and fallen leaves on the concrete.

Here is the clickbait version: you are not special. Your pain is not a unique punishment designed for your particular résumé. Plenty of people are tired, broke, grieving, waiting on a call, or pretending they are fine in the grocery aisle.

That sentence can sound cruel. It is meant as relief. When you treat your hard season as a private curse, you get lonely on top of the original problem. When you remember that difficulty is widely distributed, you can look around and see company instead of a spotlight.

Ordinary hardship is still hardship. It just is not a verdict on your worth.

This does not mean you should minimize what hurts. Go to the appointment. Ask for help. Take the nap. Cry in the car if that is what the day requires. Just do not build a story where you are the only one who got handed a rough chapter.

What to do with that

  • Assume the person in front of you is carrying something you cannot see.
  • Skip the competition about who has it worse.
  • Tell one trusted person a true sentence about your week.
  • Offer a small kindness without requiring a matching wound.

You are not special. Neither are they. That is why gentleness travels well.
