September 2026 · The season
The light is leaving earlier
Fall does not arrive as a pumpkin. It arrives as 6:40 p.m. Meet it halfway.

Fall, as sold, is a sweater and a candle. Fall as lived is the sun dropping while you are still answering one more message.
If you live somewhere that stayed hot through August — and most of the country did — September is not a maple postcard. It is a change in the clock. Dinner happens in the dark a little sooner. The parking lot lights come on during pickup. You notice, one evening, that the air at 7:30 does not feel like a hair dryer.
That is the season. Enjoy that.
The practical move is to go outside the minute the heat breaks. In much of the South and the middle of the country, that is after six. Put on whatever shoes you already own. Walk twenty minutes. You are not training. You are collecting the part of the day that is actually pleasant.
Bring nothing. Do not turn it into a podcast commute unless you want to. The point is to be a body in cooling air, which is one of the cheapest good feelings available.
Then come home and turn a lamp on
Cook something that takes a pot. Do not optimize this. Chili, soup, a roasted chicken if you have one. The first cool evening is a reason, not a personality.
If you have kids, let them stay out ten minutes later than feels efficient. If you live alone, text someone a specific thing — “I walked after dinner” — not a vague offer to catch up.
You do not need a new wardrobe, a cabin, or a better attitude. You need to notice that the light is leaving earlier, and meet it halfway.
