A quieter kitchen

Cook one thing this week that takes a pot and some time. Dinner does not have to be a project or a delivery app.

A pot of soup, a wooden spoon, and a bowl on a worn kitchen table.

There is a kind of cooking that is content, and there is a kind of cooking that is Tuesday. This is about Tuesday.

Pick one pot thing this week: soup, chili, a stew, beans with whatever is in the drawer. Use onions, oil, salt, and time. You do not need a new pan. You do not need a spice you cannot pronounce. If you have a leftover roasted vegetable, put it in. If you have a can of tomatoes, you have a start.

The goal is not a better kitchen. The goal is a house that smells like dinner.

Put the pot on while you still have some daylight. Let it work while you walk, or while you sit down for that hour without the phone. Come back and eat from a bowl. Leftovers are the prize, not a failure of planning.

What to skip

Skip the idea that weeknight food should look like a photograph. Skip the guilt if you also order pizza on Friday. Skip the ten-step marinade. A quieter kitchen is one that is used, then wiped, then left alone.

If you do not cook, this can be assembling: a rotisserie chicken, a bag of salad, a pot of rice. Heat still counts. Sitting down still counts. The point is to eat like a person who lives here, not like a person passing through.
