Community is a word that has been asked to do too much. A block is simpler. It is the people whose trash day is your trash day.

You do not have to host a dinner. You have to stop being a ghost in your own building or cul-de-sac. Wave. Learn one name. Use it. If you see a package sitting out in the rain, move it under the overhang. If the bins are still at the curb on Thursday evening and you know they are older, roll them in.

A peaceful life is easier when the hallway is not a cold war.

This is not “networking.” This is not a favor bank. You will not be best friends. You might be the person who can accept a spare key, or the person whose dog everyone recognizes. That is plenty.

If you have been the quiet one for years, a single introduction will feel oversized. Do it anyway. “I’m — . I live in 4B.” Then talk about the weather, which is, in September, actually interesting.
