How to enjoy fall without buying it

You already have weather, trees, and a pair of shoes. The catalog is optional.

Scattered oak and pecan leaves along a concrete curb in early fall.

Fall has been turned into a product line: the mug, the throw, the scented anything, the trip to look at trees you do not live near. You can like those things. You do not need them to have the season.

Open a window at night as soon as the air allows it. Walk under whatever trees you have — live oak, pecan, maple, a city honey locust. Eat an apple that is actually in season where you are. Carry a sweater in the car because the evening will lie to you.

The season is free. The accessories are a separate hobby.

If you want a ritual, make it cheap and repeatable. Same walk after the heat breaks. Same pot of chili the first week the nights drop. Same lamp on at 6:30. Ritual is just a decision you stop renegotiating.

You can still go to a football game, a farmers market, or a house with a fire pit. Just do not wait for the matching set. The year is already turning. Meet it in the clothes you have.
