When coffee turns into a milkshake

Fancy drinks can be dessert in a to-go cup. Enjoy them — just notice what you are drinking.

A mug of coffee on a wooden porch railing in soft morning light.

Somewhere between drip coffee and a drink with whipped cream, caramel drizzle, and a name longer than a sentence, caffeine stopped being breakfast and started being dessert. That is fine. Dessert is allowed. The trouble starts when the milkshake pretends to be fuel.

You do not need a purity contest. You need a clear label in your own head. If the cup is mostly sugar and dairy with a coffee accent, call it a treat. Have it on purpose. Do not drink it every morning because the app made it look like a personality.

A treat enjoyed once is pleasure. A treat mistaken for routine is fog.

A practical split: weekday coffee can be simple — hot, iced, a splash of milk if you want it. Save the elaborate cup for a Saturday walk or an afternoon when you would have bought ice cream anyway. Read the sugar line once. You do not have to memorize it. You have to stop being surprised by the crash at 11.

Enjoy the milkshake. Just do not ask it to do the job of coffee.
